Four of Google’s most influential engineers – Jeff Dean and three core architects of Google’s AI empire – have left to co-found Discovery Loop, a public-benefit AI startup unveiled on August 6.

This founding team built Google’s foundational compute infrastructure, the original Google Brain system, and the Gemini model end-to-end. Collectively, they rank among the top 10 most impactful engineers in Google’s history.

Their expertise spans distributed systems, early deep learning, and multimodal large models. Now they unite to tackle one goal: automating scientific experimentation with AI – running massive iterative trials, exploring recursive self-optimization, and accelerating R&D in materials, chip design, and pharmaceuticals.

Alphabet has taken an equity stake, and Google Cloud will supply compute resources. Koray Kavukcuoglu now leads Gemini forward.
